4th day of September

that wasn't a very creative title, oh well, but not many interesting things have been going on lately.

September 30 in 30 has started. Prayer is indeed important. Whom do you fear? God or man? Can you say that "To disappoint Him means everything. To disappoint people means nothing." Well, thank God for courage today :)

Anyway, have still been reading Jurong's pastoral letter and encouragement page and here's a food for thought about church.

A simple checklist:

•       Is Christ still the head of the church?

•       Is Christ still the corner-stone?

•       Is Christ still the foundation of the church?

•       Does Christ approve of our methods?

We must ask ourselves these questions:

•       What is the basis for the church – Christ or man?

•       Who is the head of the church – Christ or man?

•       To whom should we turn to revive the church – Christ or man?

•       For whose glory does the church exist – Christ or man?

•       What is the hope of the church – Christ or man?

Many churches today are "seeker-sensitive" or cater to the preferences of people, especially the inclusion of worldly-style music. Well, is that wrong? Think of the above.

Argh, just don't feel motivated to do MPO research essay. Sigh... -.-" Want to do but cannot get moving. 2 weeks isn't a long time....

Just thought of these words:

"(1) And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

(2) And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

(3) And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

(4) And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."

(Revelation 21:1-4)

1 month since school started!

yay! week 5 of school is ending soon. Time passes so quickly doesn't it? I really cannot imagine being 2nd, 3rd, 4th year and eventually graduating. And so often the usual questions come by: What job am I going to apply for? Where would the Lord have me to go? Back to Singapore or remain here in Australia? etc etc, you can probably guess the rest. Hard questions to answer, tough decisions to make, but God's leading is sure, and there is no mistake.

Some weird news of the past few days:

- New York authorities accuse a 35-year-old man of trying to hire someone to kill his wife and cut off her hand with a samurai sword to get her $27,000 diamond wedding ring.

(that's rather extreme)

------------

-SAN FRANCISCO - Imagine juicing up your laptop computer or cell phone without plugging them into an electrical socket. That's a luxury that could be provided by wireless power transmission, a concept that has been bandied about for decades but is creeping closer to becoming viable.

Building off work unveiled last year by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers, Intel Corp. on Thursday demonstrated how to make a 60-watt light bulb glow from an energy source 3 feet away. The Intel team did it with relatively high efficiency, losing only a quarter of the energy the researchers started with.

(eh, got password protection or not? Later someone tap my "WiTricity" (wireless electricity). :P )

---------------

WASHINGTON - Roll back the clock to 1961: John F. Kennedy was inaugurated president. The Peace Corps was founded. The Dow Jones industrials hit 734. Gasoline reached 31 cents a gallon.

And the number of people killed in U.S. traffic accidents that year topped 36,200.

This year, gasoline climbed over $4 a gallon, and the traffic death toll — according to one study — appears headed to the lowest levels since Kennedy moved into the White House.

(haha, not much comment. Let's see if the death toll goes up when fuel prices go down :P )

--------------

CLAYMONT, Delaware - A woman is charged with plotting the real-life abduction of a boyfriend she met through the virtual reality Web site "Second Life."

(Second Life must be too real until ppl can do this kind of thing...)

---------------

VALLEY CITY, N.D. - Carol Umsted got more than the word of God during services this summer at the Congregational United Church of Christ of Valley City.

She also got $50 worth of free gas. For the local farmer, it was a nice side benefit, at a time when gas was more than $4 a gallon.

Churches nationwide are making similar offers, ranging from gas card raffles to 99 cent gas sales at local stations, to boost attendance during the vacation season and attract new members.

(tch tch... This is so unbecoming. I listened to a sermon today regarding this. http://www.calvaryjurong.com/sermon_notes/sermon_20080803.html)

---------------

Hmm, my mind feels rather blank these few days... maybe cos recovering from last week's fever? It just doesn't feel quite right. Or... was the lecturer right by saying personality is quite stable over time? Wonder how a blank mind fits into a personality trait. haha. Well, somehow I feel uncomfortable being quiet, but then again I can't find anything to say! (or at least I finally thought of what to say when the moment is over) What a dilemma.... Also quite un-spontaneous.. maybe lack of general knowledge?

Sigh, what can I do? (hm, and why am I criticizing myself in this post?...) I only have my first and last resort which is to trust God.

"But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him." (Psalms 37:39-40)

Some thoughts about evangelism:
"And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house." (Ezekiel 2:6)

A day of patience-testing

"rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring!"

hm? why this morning so weird one? alas, sigh... got slight fever. Having a fever in winter is definitely not a welcome thing.

Oh well, took pandadol, and thank God, I still went to school.

Came home at 2.20pm and slept.

Woke at 5.30pm and turned on the com. It didn't start.

What a day....

So upset was I but I remembered to pray for patience...

Almost gave up until system restore managed to get it running after many tries.

"Praise the Lord", a sigh of relief. Thank God I didn't have to lose any of my work through reformatting.

Let us never take anything for granted. No, not even the least of things.

A song to share:

A Christian Home

O give us homes built firm upon the Savior,
Where Christ is Head and Counselor and Guide;
Where every child is taught His love and favor
And gives his heart to Christ, the crucified:
How sweet to know that tho his footsteps waver
His faithful Lord is walking by his side!

O give us homes with godly fathers, mothers,
Who always place their hope and trust in Him;
Whose tender patience turmoil never bothers,
Whose calm and courage trouble cannot dim;
A home where each finds joy in serving others,
And love still shines, tho days be dark and grim.

O give us homes where Christ is Lord and Master,
The Bible read, the precious hymns still sung;
Where prayer comes first in peace or in disaster,
And praise is natural speech to every tongue;
Where mountains move before a faith that's vaster,
And Christ sufficient is for old and young.

O Lord, our God, our homes are Thine forever!
We trust to Thee their problems, toil, and care;
Their bonds of love no enemy can sever
If Thou art always Lord and Master there:
Be Thou the center of our least endeavor-
Be Thou our Guest, our hearts and homes to share.

4th week of school begins

yup, and I've been here for 5 weeks already. School's as per normal i guess... Physics and Calculus not a lot of new things to learn, so that's manageable. Engineering systems design and managing people and organizations have been quite interesting too. Physics prac wasn't that bad after the first one.. haha. Today we made a 'railgun'. lol.. okay lah.. we launched a magnet using the solenoid... that is strong indeed. haha.

This internet has been v. unstable since i switched to it a few days ago... dots. haiz...

There are other things that are not going very right at the moment... reminds me of a really thought-provoking devotional passage last yf camp. Is the world your playground or battleground? Do we seek to "play" (ie, enjoy ourselves a lot) and forget about the spiritual battle? We do that too oftentimes. "I wonder have I done my best for Jesus, when He has done so much for me". "The hours I've wasted are so many, the hours I've spent for Christ so few".

"His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord." (Matthew 25:23) We all have been given "a few things". Yet is it so hard to be faithful over these "few things"? Consider what it means to be faithful. Not just turning up for meetings and reading your Bible superficially. Compare your faithfulness with God's faithfulness and you'll see how much it pales in comparison.

How then to be faithful? By human strength? The author of a book I recently finished quoted: "
And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God."
(Acts 5:38-39) Though the sub chapter was referring to the sure foundation that we must have as first priority in order to be effective in the community, it drive the point home that the work of men "will come to nought" and if it be of God, "ye cannot overthrow it".

How do you comprehend the fact of "ye cannot overthrow it"? In this age where the developed nations pride themselves in technology and commonly believe that one is in control of anything, especially one's destiny, how do we view this statement which is a stark contrast to the world? Alas, beware of human pride. "But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." (James 4:6)

Stop! and think now!... where do all my achievements and possessions go after I pass from this world? No, do not deny an answer to this question because it does not apply to you now! Where? seriously... where? Too often people do not want to think of an answer because they do not want an answer to such a taboo subject of death. I'll tell you where they'll go... they remain here on earth and you cannot bring them along. No, not one bit, not even your most prized material posssession. That is the hard fact. "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." (James 4:14)

So is this world your playground? Picture this: an army is fighting a war. What happens to a soldier who stops and rest? That isn't the tip of the iceberg yet. What if he plays or fools around trying to seek pleasure rather than pressing on? But sadly, we are prone to do that due to our old nature.

Solution? It is never easy, but be humble, and trust in Him. "And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." (2 Corinthians 12:9)

"Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;" (Ephesians 6:14-18)

This is the illustration of the Christian soldier's armor. Will you wear it? Or take it off so that it is more comfortable and lighten our load so that we can enjoy life to the max?

Will He say, "Well done, good and faithful servant"?

2nd week of school

The rest of the week after monday was quite okay. Went for Melb Uni devotional fellowship on tuesday... haha.. despite 3 mobile saying that my order will arrive between 11 and 5pm. guess what? it arrived at 6+. haha. Disappeared off to Bible study after that.

Friday's ESD workshop was surprisingly short.. 1 hour 15 min instead of 3 hours. haha.. but we just did intros and all that lah. went to victoria market after that with richard and his unilodge mates... in the rain. (okay, it was light rain lah).

Hm... still have been wasting time lately.. that's quite sad.

Something striking i read today:

"... the persuasiveness of the Christian faith includes factors that are not, strictly speaking, cognitive- a point too often neglected in discussion of apologetics. It raises the matter of who we are as we try to defend the truth of God and persuade others. What looms large is our own character, the quality of our love, and our ability to relate to other people with both courage and sensitivity.

A closely related factor is the Christian community- where Christian people as they live and relate to each other can demonstrate something of the truth of God. Francis Schaeffer wrote that the love and sense of community between Christians is the 'final apologetic.' ..."

Life continues on...

Okay... somehow i feel rather bored and empty after today's physics practical. Oh well, first time there and was thrown a physics prac to do without any instructions. Hm... good thing it was sort of basic circuits stuff, but then again, i totally am not sure of the format of how to present the report... So yea, blur here and there and finished most of the prac report except the discussion and conclusion portions at the end. :( Somehow Ji Wei got a larger group and managed to complete it via referring (or copying.. haha) Eh, but I didn't expect prac to be so boring. Sianz... Hm, maybe it's true to some extent that how boring it is also depends on the people around you.

Indeed as i reflect, i still need to continue waiting upon the Lord.

1st week of school over!

yes! okay.. it wasn't that tough. haha. homework so far has been quite little comparatively.

Watched IMAX yesterday with church ppl.. haha.. on my way there, a reminder of God's promise was seen in the sky....

anyway, watched dark knight and it was quite ahem... okay, nvm. the joker's acting was the best :P, but ok lah, i heard the actor himself committed suicide after being too into that 'character'. dots... but the theatre was nice. It's the rectangular screen version of the Omni Theatre next to science centre in sg, but with a lot more seats and more expensive. Better sound also I think... haha. Eh... but cleaning up the theatre seems like a big affair after ppl leave. The floor really got decoration sia... :p decorated with golden fluffy stuff. haha

But we were good students and didn't litter the place after this :P

Went for supper at lygon street after that at an italian restaurant. Pasta and pizza as usual, but nice nonetheless.

Better get down to work. But first, here are other pics which i didn't manage to post in the previous post.

The beach at Portsea last saturday at the MBS retreat.

More food!

More pictures of the city

Street show. Yes they were standing on ladders. haha.

And they were going to juggle those. (sorry, the juggling pic is somewhere, can't find it)

Okay, back in singapore, the garden continues to grow... haha

And last wednesday, I took this from my window. :)

All of the above photos save the last one were taken with the N82. :D (i know fangzhou is going to get jealous again... hahaa)

School has started...

On a side note.. wow, this is the 100th post. looks like I don't really blog that regularly nowadays. Maybe it's because I'm enjoying myself too much! :P

Sch started yesterday. Quite okay lah.. had 4 lectures. The physics lecturer was so entertaining... no sarcasm intended, but I don't think i'll be able to find a reason to sleep in that class... lol. but maybe for the calculus and management lectures.. hahah. okay, i shouldn't even be thinking about sleeping.

Come tuesday, and.... it's free! yay, finally managed to move my tuesday physics tutorial to thursday, meaning i have no sch on tues! :D:D:D

Summary of the past 1 week+: Last week was orientation. quite slack... didn't do much on the whole, but got to know my way around the uni. Went tracting on friday. Haven't done that for a really long time already, so yea, with the help of the older ones I'm beginning to pick up again.

Weekends were nice. Went to Portsea (somewhere 100km south of melbourne in the peninsular) for monash bible study retreat (open to other uni students of course). Had discussions and bible study about church and worship. Yups, those are 2 very important things for Christian. We lost our way there actually... but thankfully managed to find it eventually. Had a sumptuous dinner prepared by aunty Diana. Well, after the bible study ppl played games till 4am.. haha. i slept at 2am.. tired liao. woke up at 8am... had a good breakfast and had bible study after that again. Lunch was at an italian restaurant next to the beach.. hahaa. and played bonding games at the beach after that. Well, got to know more ppl :). and it was time to head back to the city for the welcome steamboat.

Sunday was packed again to the brim. haha. Monday came and sch started. Bought my engineering textbook too, after my ATM card could work (thankfully, otherwise I won't have money for the rest of the 6 months.. lol.) And Tuesday came... no class! haha. Finished up my little assignment and then went for tracting. Yups, and then went for gospel rally in the evening....

Looks like life will get more busy very soon... haha. More pics up another time.

And yes, i'm quite rusty in various stuff already... must be the 7 month break. haha.

1 week in melbourne

Ahh.. this week passed so fast!

Went shopping and touring most of the time these few days, more pics of that later. Managed to take taxi and trams already and got almost everything done up in my room. Phew, tiring week of walking around the entire day for 6 days. Got a new printer for $69, wow and that's cheap. At home i used a 2.1 speaker system.. then come here the 2.1 system is $79 and the 5.1 system is $89.. lol, so i got the latter... yay upgrade:) but then cannot blast anyway.. lol.

Food around was really nice... from Italian Pizza to Hong Kong food to Thai food... all really nice and all quite standard price.. haha.

Went to church on Tues, Sat and Sunday. Wow, i would i say it's quite a big difference from sg, probably because almost everyone in the youth grp here is older than me. haha, that's from being one of the oldest to being one of the youngest. And they're all very active :)) Yup, and met quite a number of ppl who know ppl i know. haha. today's msgs on priesthood of believers and Gideon the man of valour were quite good.

oh no.. orientation starts tmr... sch's beginning again :( haha.

more updates throughout the week
